ELIXIR Finland provides a high-speed data communications network for data and its processing. For example, the 10 Gbit/s private network connection between CSC and the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is used to analyse and utilize genome data from the biobanks. The Light Path is part of the Funet network maintained and developed by CSC. A similar service from CSC is also available to other interested parties.
The data produced by biosciences is doubled every few months, and the growth is accelerating. In addition, experiments produce completely new kind of data that should be processed in a meaningful way. ELIXIR is building the European bioinformatics infrastructure to support life science research, development and innovation. The results are utilized for example in medicine, food production, and environmental research.
